Handling enormous volumes of data is no longer a luxury but a must for enterprises with close links to the IT sector. What do enterprises do if they operate around the globe and have to transfer extreme quantities of data with a low level of latency? The answer is often simple and is closely linked to technology from Juniper Networks.
The problem
High-performance networks are indispensable when it comes to delivering data simultaneously to different locations around the globe. A further point to consider is that multicast traffic will scale at numerous locations at the same time. And in future, this scaling is likely to be linear. Enterprises that need 20 GB/s today would use 40 GB/s in 2018. One year later it would already be 80 GB/s. Billions of data packets create an enormous dataset that must be available worldwide and, as far as possible, without latency. All packets should reach the recipient in the right order – without failures or latency and, at the same time, as securely as possible.
Scalability is therefore the be-all and end-all when it comes to meeting the growing challenges described above. Implementing a short-term solution that becomes obsolete after just one or two years would not be economically viable for most businesses. What businesses need is customised solutions from a network equipment supplier with the necessary experience. That is exactly the approach taken by Juniper Networks. When they leave the factory, modern routers can connect enterprises and computer centres all around the world with a data rate of 40 Gbit/s. Capacity can be subsequently expanded at low cost.
Own MPLS networks as a solution
Router models such as the Universal Edge MX480 3D are suitable for providing own MPLS networks with a bandwidth of at least 40 Gbit/s. Thanks to the connectionless nature of MPLS networks, the router already achieves this bandwidth when it leaves the factory. The result is very low latency as there is no detour via other networks. A further important issue is scalability: linecards with a maximum bandwidth of 100 Gbit/s are also compatible with the MX Series of this router and, if required, can simply be used in the existing device. There is therefore no need for investment in completely new hardware.
Uniform code bases promise simplification
Using numerous different solutions from various network providers comes with the basic disadvantage that different operating systems always have to be used. Interoperability is therefore not always guaranteed. However, Juniper Networks routers and switches all rely on Junos OS. A uniform code base facilitates the interaction between devices and also simplifies adaptation within the enterprise to the firm’s own needs. Applications can be connected simultaneously via an enterprise’s own MetaFabric architecture – via multiple computer centres at the same time and again practically without latency.
Fit for the future
The MX Series of routers from Juniper Networks mentioned above leads the field in many ways: for example in terms of system capacity, performance and density. They also provide the required agility for responding rapidly to challenges in connection with networks of both this and the next generation. Thanks to the high level of capital efficiency, even companies that cannot afford comparable “classical” systems can implement this solution. And finally, the prompt implementation of new applications via this technology solution is a further key reason why companies are making the switch.
And the results?
Companies that opt for Juniper Networks benefit in a number of different areas:
- Scalability and efficiency enable worldwide provisioning of important applications in a very short time – even with the sharp rise in data density expected in the future.
- Network administration is largely automated, which boosts operational efficiency. The overwhelming percentage of errors resulting from human failure is entirely eliminated.
- Junos OS simplifies the remedying of errors, automation and administration. Stability, rollback and the versioning of configurations require little effort.
- It is simpler to obtain an overview of the network and of how data reaches its destination via devices, interfaces and lines. This helps, for example, in remedying errors caused by temporary losses of IT infrastructure.
Handling large quantities of data still involves challenges – but these can be overcome much more efficiently by integrating solutions from Juniper Networks.
